What Makes Schrade Pocket Knives Great

George Schrade was a talented machinest and toolmaker employed by the US Patent Office in the late 1800s when he invented the automatic opening, switchblade, knife. He would later, in 1904, form the Schrade Knife Company with his brothers Joe and William in Walden NY. Once his knife business was established, George went on to invent machines that would improve the companies production quality. These included the neck drawing machine, the heating machine, sharpeners, saws on center, bone jigger, bolster and automatic shielding machines. It was George’s pursuit of the highest quality and craftsmanship that had his company produce some of the best knives of his time.

It was George Schrades desire to make the best possible knife that has become the lasting legacy of the company that bears his name. All Schrade knives are made with the best materials using the highest levels of craftsmanship.

Today, Schrade brand knives are manufactured by the Taylor Brands, LLC, following the same standards for quality. Schrade knives are manufactured using the highest quality materials available, including:

    • Unbreakable sawcut Delrin handles
    • 1095 High Carbon Cutlery steel blades
    • Solid Nickel Silver bolsters
    • Solid Brass Liners
    • Solid Pin construction

Each Schrade Folding Knife is assembled using up to 22 separate parts, requiring up to 120 hand operations, including 100% hand finished edges for all knife blades.

Schrade is so confident in the quality of their knives that each one comes with a Lifetime Warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. Additionally, the Uncle Henry knife,  is guaranteed for 1 full year against loss since Schrade is so confident you will like it so much you’ll be extra careful not ot lose it.

Although the name of the company has changed, the Schrade brand of folding knives are manufactured to the same high quality standards that George Schrade insisted upon when he first started manufacturing knives in 1904.

    What is ‘walk’ and ‘talk’

    Schrade Pocket Knife

    Schrade Pocket Knife

The ‘walk’ and ‘talk’ of Schrade pocket knives result from the 22 separate parts and 100 distinctive hand operations that are required to properly assemble each and every one. Most important to the ‘walk’ and ‘talk’ of the knife is the spring.

The spring is located on the back of the knife. It is the metal portion that is riveted between the body sections of the knife. It is the spring that keeps the knife blade either open or closed, so proper treatment, polishing, and fitting of each spring is critical to proper knife operation.

All springs must be heat treated in order to obtain the proper stiffness. If a spring is improperly treated it can become too soft, too stiff, and even too brittle, all of which will prevent the pocket knife from functioning properly.

The end portion of the spring that the bottom end of the tang (the section of the blade within the knife body that the hinge pin goes through) contacts is called the blade walk. When the knife is opened, the butt end of the tang rubs across the walk so it must be smooth for the knife to open without grinding. The spring must also fit snugly within the body so there is minimal play when opened (the knife should not shake freely from side to side). When a knife is assembled with a properly fitted spring the blade will open smoothly, finishing with an audible click, as it snaps into place. This is known as the knife’s ‘walk’.

The same is true for when a properly fitted Schrade knife closes. The same butt end of the blades tang rubs across the walk section of the spring, then will snap shut shortly after the blade passes within 45 degrees of closure. A blade that audibly clicks shut is said to ‘talk’.

All Schrade pocket knives are assembled with properly fitted springs, and are 100% hand inspected so they all ‘wallk’ and ‘talk’.
